Maria Saras Ochoa, 44, a single mother of two children, worked in the housekeeping department at a hotel in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico to support her family. She had no access to health insurance when she began working at her new job.
One day, she began to feel a sensation of slight pain in the lower right side of her stomach. She went to the doctor’s office for a checkup only to find out she was diagnosed with appendicitis. She became very nervous and anxious hearing this bad news and was given medication to treat the inflammation. The medicine did not seem to reduce her inflammation and her pain began to worsen.
She asked her manager for access to health insurance because her pain and inflammation had become unbearable, which he granted to her. She went for consultation again, and was directed immediately to the emergency room due to her severe pain. Her appendix had ruptured and had infected other areas of her intestines which had to be treated urgently.
She had also experienced sepsis as the infections spread to other areas of her gastrointestinal tract.
Eventually, she was treated from these life-threatening complications and the doctors were surprised to see her remarkable recovery. However, this recovery took a major toll on her, as she had lost her job.
Her daughter, who was her primary caregiver, also became jobless because of her dedication to taking care of her mother.
Financially troubled, the Ochoa family is in need of help as Maria recovers from her surgery and goes back to work.
